Staff, Students Warned After USD Server Hacked PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 03 December 2005
Students and faculty at the University of San Diego received letters Friday notifying them that they could be victims of a security breach on campus. Three weeks ago, a hacker broke into servers on campus that contained the personal information of more than 8,000 students and staff members, NBC 7/39 reported. Information on the servers included Social Security numbers and Internal Revenue Service tax information.

A security expert said Friday the letters sent to faculty and staff are not as helpful as they could be.

"You need the phone numbers to call to place the fraud alert," said Beth Givens, of the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse. "You need information on how to order your free credit reports. You need to know you need to be checking your credit report every few months. All of those things are not in the letter and they need to be."
