The Guardian yesterday reported that Russian thieves have stolen more than €1m from personal French bank accounts using their online banking services.
The scammers used key logging applications delivered via Trojan backdoors to record usernames and passwords entered by unsuspecting users when they logged on to their online accounts. The trojans were not activated until the user accessed the banks websites, making them difficult to be detected by both the user and antivirus applications.
Once the thieves had they account details they then went about transferring money to third party mule accounts. The French police were first alerted to the scam in November 2004, since then over €1m has been siphoned off, the largest individual hit being for €40,000.
A dozen Russians and their Ukrainian masterminds have been arrested in Moscow and St. Petersberg as a result of the investigations. |
